NFL GM on the potential asking price of a Myles Garrett trade

NFL: DEC 29 Dolphins at Browns

A Myles Garrett trade is a possibility for the Falcons and probably the other 30 teams in the NFL, but the big question is: how much is it going to cost?

When the Raiders traded Khalil Mack to the Bears in 2018, he was 27 years old and garnered two first-round picks from Chicago. Garrett is a couple of years older but is a tier above Mack even when he was in his prime. I’d think two first-rounders would only get the conversation started, but that might be too steep.

One NFL GM told Dianna Russini that a Myles Garrett trade will cost, “Probably a 1+. Can’t wait for the “It will be 3 1s” crowd. Not happening. 1 and a 2. 1 and 2 3s. Throw a player in there.”

The Browns have reiterated they intend to keep Myles Garrett, especially given the financial fallout of moving him. They’d take on considerable dead cap because they’ve restructured his contract every year since he inked the $125 million extension in 2020.

While an active GM is much more plugged in than me, I find it incredibly difficult to believe the asking price won’t begin with two first-round picks. The Browns will have to take on more than $36 million in dead cap, so it’s not as simple as some fans believe.

That’s not the only money that is a factor in these Myles Garrett trade hypotheticals. The Falcons, or whoever acquires him, will be on the hook for a contract extension somewhere in the neighborhood of $150-160 million over four years.

There are a lot of moving parts, but the Falcons should exhaust all resources in pursuit of a Myles Garrett trade.
