The Falcons‘ red helmets are unanimously loved by fans, and we might get more iterations.
The NFL has expanded its uniform policy to allow for a third helmet to be added, the league announced on Wednesday.
The NFL informed clubs today it has revised the uniform policy to allow teams a third helmet design, per source.
This expansion was offered to the teams that were going through the re-design process for the 2024 season and is now open to all clubs for the 2025 season. pic.twitter.com/8pXHLtZqjm

Two years ago, the league approved alternate helmet designs, and it was clearly successful. The ‘one-shell’ rule had been in place for a decade because of player health and safety but has been left behind.
The second and third helmets will be known as “alternate color helmets” and can only be worn with “one of the club’s authorized optional uniforms (classic, alternate and/or color rush).”
According to the league’s website, the Falcons’ alternate helmets will be subject to the following requirements:
- Clubs must obtain an entire new set of alternate color helmets for all players
- Alternate color helmets must be the same make, model, and size as the applicable player’s
primary helmet - Alternate color helmets must be made available to all players at the start of training camp
and should be fit at the same time as the primary helmet - Alternate color helmets must be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading
up to the game in which they will be used.
The Falcons brought the red helmets back from the Tommy Nobis days when Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez were roaming the Georgia Dome, and they were a hit.
It’s not just Atlanta either. The Patriots, Seahawks, Broncos, Eagles, Titans, Dolphins, Buccaneers, and others are all roaring successes.
I can’t wait to see what the Falcons come up with.
