Multiple Georgia players defend Jalen Carter following McShay’s comments

Todd McShay had some pretty brash things to say about Jalen Carter yesterday when discussing the potential top-five draft pick on ESPN, claiming there are character concerns surrounding the Georgia Bulldogs star.

“With Carter, there are some character issues, does he get along with everybody, What’s he like to deal with in the locker room, those sorts of issues” McShay said this week on ESPN, via 247 Sports. “I know it’s early in the process, but I’m forewarning everybody out there. Carter is going to be a hot-button name when we talk about some of the intangible aspects of it. I think Pete Carroll [and the Seattle Seahawks] at No. 2, who has a long history of taking guys with questionable character and then developing them and having them work out, that would make a lot of sense to me.

“That will be the big discussion. It’s not about his talent, his size or his explosive take off or finishing as a pass rusher, it’s about the character and do we want to bring that guy into the building.”

From the outside perspective, I’ve never heard a single negative thing surrounding Jalen Carter until now, but this is the time of year when rumors start to get leaked on purpose to affect players’ draft status. There very easily could be a team infatuated with Carter picking at #5, hoping he falls, that might attempt to start such a narrative. I’m not saying that’s 100% what happened, but his teammates believe to think McShay’s comments are ludicrous.

Ryland Goede, a tight end for the University of Georgia, had this to say about Carter.

To which defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse responded, “Facts!!”

While this is unfortunately common practice leading up to the draft, judging by how others have responded to the accusations, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Todd McShay walk back some of these comments regarding Jalen Carter’s character.
