The Braves are surely not going to be in on the top free agents in the starting pitcher market because it seems the prices have already exceeded $200 million and approaching $300 million for a guy like Yoshinobu Yamamoto; however, that doesn’t mean a trade cannot come to fruition.
Atlanta has been considered a finalist for Dylan Cease as the White Sox look to move the Georgia native for a haul of prospects considering he’s under two years of team control.
Though he’s represented by Scott Boras, a patented Alex Anthopoulos trade-and-extension could be on the table, given he’s from Milton. The Braves have also been linked to another frontline starter.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, they’re one of several teams that might try to trade for Corbin Burnes. Feinsand notes that most believe the Brewers will trade him this year, either before or during the season.
Corbin Burnes is entering the final year of his contract, and as a client of Scott Boras, it seems unlikely he will sign an extension before testing free agency, but the prospect of adding an arm like Brunes to a rotation of Max Fried, Spencer Strider, and Charlie Morton has to be enticing for Anthopoulos.
It would easily be the best group of starters in the league, to go with the best lineup in baseball and one of the best relief cores too. Another interesting factor in all of this is Burnes’ durability.
The potential of losing him after just one season might deter AA, but if he’s looking for a workhorse, look no further than the 2021 Cy Young winner. Burnes has made more than 28 starts in each of the last three seasons, averaging nearly 190 innings in each one.
There are not many better options available in terms of talent and availability than Corbin Burnes, and that’s exactly why it’ll be an expensive acquisition.
