The hype surrounding the Falcons immediately died in Week 1 behind Kirk Cousins‘ pathetic debut in Atlanta as the Steelers won the opener without scoring a touchdown, and if he doesn’t improve quickly, the calls for Michael Penix Jr. will be heard, according to Falcons legend Michael Vick.

There are some people who cannot be convinced Mike Vick isn’t the best quarterback in Falcons history, even if he isn’t. When he speaks, Atlanta listens. That’s still true to this day, and when Vick gives Kirk Cousins this stark warning, fans are listening.
Of course, Falcons fans and Vick don’t make that call. It’s Raheem Morris’ decision, and Cousins’ starting job is in no way in jeopardy. However, this is only the beginning. The calls for Penix will only grow louder if Cousins continues to struggle.
Mike Vick is only the start. Fans, other analysts, and eventually those within the organization will begin to question why Michael Penix is sitting on the bench. It’s probably not the right decision from the team’s point of view, but this is the drama you get when you pay Cousins $180 million and then draft Penix in the same offseason.
Kirk Cousins can silence all of the naysayers by performing against the Eagles tonight on Monday Night Football. It’s important to remember that the alternative isn’t always better. There’s no guarantee that Penix will be better than Cousins; in fact, the odds are that he would be worse.
Just look at how other rookies around the league have performed through the first two weeks of the season, even #1 overall pick Caleb Williams. That’s the nature of the NFL. The Falcons are better off with Kirk Cousins at this point, but again, I reiterate that this is only the beginning.
