The Falcons shocked a lot of people when Michael Penix Jr. didn’t dress for their second preseason game against the Ravens over the weekend. Raheem Morris explained that they’d already seen enough and didn’t want to risk injury.
I’ve been quite outspoken on how I feel about the entire situation. The Falcons don’t plan on playing Michael Penix Jr… at all. So, what’s the point of holding him out? Protecting him for next year? Protecting him for the “ultra-valuable” regular season second-team reps?
No, it doesn’t make any sense at all. Raheem Morris just doesn’t value the preseason like others do, and it’s that simple. However, if you ask Mike Florio, there’s a grand conspiracy going on in Flowery Branch.
Florio presented a theory that the Falcons are going to give Kirk Cousins more time to recover from his Achilles injury, which coincidentally gives Michael Penix a trial run.
“Usually, it’s impossible to roll with a first-round rookie and then bench him if/when he struggles. It’s very hard to bench the young player without cratering his confidence.” Florio wrote. “In Atlanta, however, the Falcons could decide Cousins needs a little more time to recover from his torn Achilles tendon, and that Penix will play as Cousins finishes the climb back to 100 percent.
This would allow them to start the season with Penix. If/when he struggles, Cousins would suddenly be good to go. If Penix plays well, the Falcons can let him keep playing,” he continued.
Mike Florio truly is one of a kind. He is just a normal, dumb NFL fan, like you and me, except he has an incredibly large platform to peddle his opinions. “It’s perfect cover for giving Penix a trial run” is a hilarious theory on the explanation for the Falcons not playing the 8th overall pick.
