The Falcons are being investigated for tampering with Kirk Cousins before the legal tampering period, and if Mike Florio had it his way, the two sides would be banished from the NFL altogether.
The founder of Pro Football Talk suggested an insane punishment where the Falcons and Vikings swap first-round picks, Minnesota getting No. 8 and Atlanta receiving No. 11; it was ridiculous then, and it’s ridiculous now.
But don’t let that stop you, Florio. He’s once again peddling fan fiction, and the rest of the Vikings fan base is running with it.
“The Falcons have the eighth pick in round one. The Vikings have the eleventh. What if the punishment is as simple as the Falcons and Vikings flip-flopping the two picks?” Mike Florio questioned.
“The NFL set the precedent last year, with the sudden and unexpected news of the Cardinals-Eagles settlement. It would make sense for it to happen again, between the Falcons and the Vikings,” he added.
The Cardinals and Eagles dilemma Florio is referring to happened last year. Arizona GM Monti Ossenfort had an impermissible conversation with then-Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. Eventually, a punishment was handed down.
The Eagles and Cardinals swapped third-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, while Arizona will receive Philly’s fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. It set the precedent, and the end result with the Falcons and Vikings could be similar. But first-round picks? I’m not as confident as Florio seems to be.
“The end result could, and perhaps should, be that the Vikings will have the eighth and 23rd picks,” Florio said.
He’s a Vikings fan and has his favorite team’s best interest in mind, specifically Minnesota’s ability to trade up into the top five.
The NFL pundit isn’t wrong that the Falcons and Kirk Cousins are guilty; However, acting like it had an egregious impact on the result of the quarterback’s free agency and therefore should be punished accordingly is borderline comical.
