For the seventh straight season, the Atlanta Falcons will not be participating in the postseason. That’s a sign of a truly incompetent franchise; however, for the first time since Matt Ryan was forced out several years ago, there’s a genuine feeling of hope for the future.
The reason for that is simple: Michael Penix Jr.
The rookie 8th overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft made his NFL debut in Week 16 against the Giants. There were some hiccups initially, but his final five quarters to end the season were just about perfect, and not just for a rookie. Against the Panthers, Penix graded out as the Falcons’ best player, according to Pro Football Focus, at 95.6. He threw for over 300 yards, dazzling with throws downfield that Kirk Cousins couldn’t even dream of making in his prime, and accounted for three touchdowns as the Falcons racked up over 500 yards of offense and 38 points.
Everything the Falcons saw in Michael Penix Jr. on that rainy day in Seattle during their pre-draft workout was on full display. The physical traits are obvious, but he also appears to be far ahead of schedule when it comes to the mental aspect of the position, which is much more important to sustained success at the highest level.
Penix has the chance to be an elite quarterback, and his passing grade from Pro Football Focus suggests just that. Among signal callers with at least 100 pass attempts, Penix’s 87.6 passing grade ranks fourth in the league, behind only Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Justin Herbert.Â
Of course, the sample size isn’t very large, and the defenses of the Giants, Commanders, and Panthers are not exactly world beaters. However, these are also the first ever starts for Michael Penix Jr. He’ll only improve with more experience and extra time with his receivers. It’s impossible not to be impressed with what he’s shown thus far, and for Falcons fans, there’s finally reason for excitement moving forward.
