Matt Ryan has popped his hot take cherry as NFL analyst

NFL: OCT 03 Buccaneers at Falcons

Joining CBS Sports, Matt Ryan has become a mainstay as a color commentator as well as an analyst for their other programs. He’s been fantastic, but Ryan just had his welcome to the NFL moment with one of the most egregious takes I’ve ever seen.

“If there was a WAR stat in football like they have in baseball, who would have the highest WAR value in the NFL?? I’ll start… TUA”

I can understand where Ryan’s coming from, to a certain extent.

Tua Tagavailoa is really the one hope the Dolphins have for being a competitive team. Miami looked like a bottom-five team in the league without their starting quarterback, so his impact cannot be overstated.

However, if we are talking WAR, it’s fairly easy to find multiple other candidates who would stand out more than Tagavailoa. Just for starters, without even thinking too hard, quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, who account for a percentage of their offense’s rushing attack, would immediately be more valuable in terms of WAR.

Matt Ryan is trying to praise Tua Tagavailoa, but this isn’t the best way to do so. The Dolphins suck without him, sure. But most teams around the league would suck without their starting quarterback. That doesn’t mean Tagavailoa would be the NFL’s leader for WAR; in fact, I could argue that non-quarterbacks would rank higher than him, like Danielle Hunter and Trey Hendrickson.

Matt Ryan is good at his second job, but this one wasn’t it, pal.
