Lions injuries leave door open for Calais Campbell to make history

NFL: SEP 10 Panthers at Falcons

The Falcons travel to Detroit to face the Lions in what should be one of the better games of the Week 3 NFL slate.

There are a number of storylines to watch in this one; Calais Campbell is on the cusp of history, and injuries could play a major role in accomplishing that feat. The 37-year-old veteran is one sack away from picking up his 100th.

The Lions have ruled out two offensive linemen in tackle Taylor Decker and guard Halapoulivaati Vaita, paving the way for Campbell to potentially draw favorable matchups.

Calais Campbell joined the Falcons this offseason in one of the more surprising moves of free agency. In the twilight years of his career, many expected him to sign with a Super Bowl contender. The Jets, Ravens, etc. all had an interest in Campbell, but he chose the Falcons.

He has only notched a handful of tackles and one quarterback hit through two games as a member of the Falcons, but his time is coming. His presence along the defensive front next to Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata is undeniably impactful.

Sunday could have the Falcons net their third win, and it could net Calais Campbell’s 100th sack, given the injuries to the Lions offensive line.
