When the Falcons signed Kirk Cousins, Kyle Pitts immediately took to social media about who would get to wear the #8 in Atlanta, which has been worn by Cousins for most of his career. Pitts even tweeted out a picture of him from his college days when he wore the #84, a number that wasn’t available when he originally arrived in Atlanta, as it was taken by Cordarrelle Patterson.

The question arose again at Kirk Cousin’s introductory press conference. The Falcons new quarterback said he had already reached out to Pitts about giving him whatever he wants for the number, to which he responded, “I just want targets every game.”
Kirk Cousins said he told @kylepitts__ he could keep the #8 jersey — but would open up his checkbook if Pitts was ok giving it up.

It sounded like there would be no issues with Cousins wearing #8 in Atlanta like he did in Washington in Minnesota, but for whatever reason, that won’t be the case. The Falcons announced yesterday Cousins will be changing his number for just the second time, donning #18 in Atlanta.

From a strictly stylistic perspective, I’m not a big fan of the #18, but who cares what I think. If Kirk Cousins starts winning games for the Falcons, he’ll quickly become among the most popular jerseys in the city. Perhaps the league stepped in and made the decision for them, but there is clearly no bad blood.
Kyle Pitts took to Twitter following the news to say that the targets are still going to come his way.
