Kirk Cousins injury revelation impacts Falcons trade possibilities

Kirk Cousins benched

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen the video floating around the internet of Kirk Cousins on Good Morning Football saying he suffered an elbow and shoulder injury in the Falcons’ Week 10 loss to the Saints.

It sent Falcons fans into a frenzy. Did Cousins lie to Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot about his health? Could the organization actually not know their quarterback was hurt? What the hell took so long to turn to Michael Penix Jr.?

There are so many different layers to peel back, but arguably, the most interesting aspect of the entire ordeal is how this news impacts Cousins’ trade value. The Falcons’ ideal scenario this offseason is to move the veteran signal caller. Obviously, the Falcons would like to get some draft capital back, but more than anything, getting as much money off the books is the chief goal.

So, what can Terry Fontenot tell other GMs? Prior to the injury, Cousins set a Falcons franchise record against the Buccaneers about a month earlier and threw for nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns in the two weeks combined before the injury.

Before that Week 10 contest, Cousins had thrown for 2,328 yards and 17 touchdowns to only seven interceptions on 69.15% passing. Over 17 games, that’s nearly 4,400 yards and 32 touchdowns to only 14 interceptions. For around $27 million, that’s a bargain. That’s what Fontenot can offer other GMs.

More than just what Cousins showed he’s capable of on the field before the injury, he provides immense value off the field. If an acquiring team had a young quarterback who needed to sit on the shelf, Cousins would be the ideal mentor.

The Falcons have a better shot at moving the signal caller and his contract if this information is true that he was hampered by an arm injury, even if it is another abysmal look for the organization.
