Thursday Night Football, Matt Ryan‘s induction into the Falcons Ring of Honor, and Kirk Cousins‘ heroics. It was a night to remember.
It was the kind of collapse that Falcons fans have become accustomed to; however, it was the Buccaneers that experienced improbable late-game woes the hands of Cousins and the Falcons.
Raheem Morris’ defense hadn’t been able to stop Baker Mayfield all night. The former No. 1 overall pick headed into the final minutes of the game with 180 yards and three touchdowns on 19 of 24 passing.
Tampa Bay had a first-and-10 on the Atlanta 28-yard line while up three points with less than two minutes to go. The games seemed over, but Mayfield and the Bucs offense lost 14 yards and never touched the ball again.
Cousins led a game-tying field goal drive, forcing overtime. The rest is history. The veteran had a career night, completing 42 of 58 passes for 509 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Not only did Cousins break his own personal best of 460 yards passing in a game, but the new Falcons quarterback also broke Matt Ryan’s franchise record for most yards in a game in front of him.
Ryan threw for 503 yards in a 2016 game against the Panthers, and on Thursday, he was inducted into the Ring of Honor. For his gift, Cousins orchestrated one of the most impressive individual performances by a Falcons player ever.
It was the perfect night. It was an improbable Falcons victory for Kirk Cousins’ coming out party against a division rival with Matt Ryan in attendance. Oh yeah, they were also wearing their beautiful throwback uniforms on top of everything.
