We all feared this was coming, and the Bringer of Rain is gone as quickly as he came.
Donaldson bet on himself last season, taking a $23 million one year “prove it deal” in Atlanta, and boy did he prove it. He knocked 37 long balls to go along with 94 RBI while serving as a major catalyst in the heart of Atlanta’s order. Donaldson cashed in on his big year, signing a deal for 4 years worth over $92 million with a 5th-year club option for $16 million, with an $8 million buyout. He will also have an opportunity to DH as he gets later into his deal with the Twins.
This isn’t the end of the world for Atlanta. Minnesota will likely be paying Donaldson gobs of money when he’s 38. Austin Riley is going to bounce back. Kris Bryant and Nolan Arenado are available in trade talks. I still really love the idea of a Francisco Lindor trade. One way or another, they will have to find a way to protect Freddie Freeman out of the cleanup hole.
Hey, at least he didn’t go to the Nats.
