Roster cutdowns are well underway around the NFL, and the Falcons could be there to pick up another team’s scraps, particularly at the cornerback and receiver positions. One name that could make a lot of sense is John Metchie III, who is drawing trade interest, according to Jordan Schultz.
Sources: Multiple teams have reached out to the #Texans to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster. It’s unclear if Houston would move him, but several team are keeping a close eye.

Schultz notes that it’s “unclear” if the Texans would be willing to trade Metchie, but if Houston does indeed deal him, Atlanta should certainly inquire.
The Alabama product was originally drafted by the Texans in 2022, but he didn’t make his debut until the 2023 season after he was diagnosed with leukemia. He returned last season but only recorded 16 catches for 158 yards.
More than anything, the Texans’ receiver room is crowded. The top three are firmly entrenched as starters in Nico Collins, the recently acquired Stefon Diggs, and Tank Dell, leaving Metchie on the outside looking in.
He’s clearly talented enough to be a complementary piece in the NFL. During the 2024 preseason, he collected 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 receptions. The Falcons have a depth issue at the position, which is why it makes sense for Atlanta to be a landing spot.
Drake London and Darnell Mooney are firmly in the WR1 and WR2 roles, while Ray-Ray McCloud has taken most of the WR3 reps this offseason. Adding a guy like Metchie could actually be a great buy-low opportunity.
The Falcons will be running a lot of 11 personnel sets, three wideouts. McCloud may be more proven than Metchie, but the latter has a higher ceiling. In Atlanta, he’ll have the opportunity to showcase his ability in a loaded Falcons offense.
