Jets reportedly have interest in former Falcons coach Arthur Smith

Falcons Arthur Smith

Sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Falcons fans have found that out the hard way this season, most of whom begged for the organization to move on from Arthur Smith, which they did following a Week 18 blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints last year.

As a result, the Falcons hired Raheem Morris, whose first season as head coach has been underwhelming, to say the least. The Falcons need a miracle to break their postseason drought, and find themselves in the same position they were in under Arthur Smith, despite investing heavily into the roster during the offseason.

Meanwhile, Smith has enjoyed his time in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are on their way to another postseason and have a much more formidable offense capable of making noise with the former Falcons head coach calling the shots. It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been enough to catch the eyes of the rest of the league.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the New York Jets are considering Arthur Smith for their head coaching vacancy, and they won’t be the only ones to inquire once the offseason begins.

“I’m told the Jets have internally discussed interest in interviewing Steelers OC Arthur Smith and Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury for the head coach vacancy, per sources,” Anderson writes on Twitter/X.

In hindsight, Smith never really got a fair shake in Atlanta. The quarterback situation was dismal, and the Falcons spent most of his tenure getting out of a messy cap situation that was created by the former regime. The fact that Smith was even able to scrape together seven wins in each of his three seasons with the team is somewhat remarkable, and one has to wonder if he would have done a better job this year than his successor in Raheem Morris.

We’ll never know, but in due time, Arthur Smith is likely to get another crack at being an NFL head coach, despite what transpired in Atlanta.
