It’s no secret that the Hawks have pursued the Raptors’ Pascal Siakam this offseason, but a trade hasn’t come to fruition. However, Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed Atlanta’s offer for Toronto has centered around De’Andre Hunter, A.J. Griffin, and draft compensation.
“Atlanta has offered a package centered around De’Andre Hunter, AJ Griffin and draft compensation to Toronto for Siakam, league sources say. But the Raptors are believed to have upped the price on any possible deal at each turn,” Charania reported.
For me, that’s a steep price to pay for a rental, which is exactly what Pascal Siakam could be. There have been no reports suggesting that he is willing to sign an extension with the Hawks or any other club that acquires him. In fact, Shams added that Siakam still would not sign an extension.
“… the external market has been tempered a bit due to the fact that it’s been made clear, league sources say, that Siakam would not extend with a team that trades for him.”
If I am the Hawks, I am not giving up any of the young pieces — Griffin, Jalen Johnson, or Onyeka Okongwu. I would be more than willing to begin the upcoming campaign with the current roster construction. Thankfully, according to Shams, it seems that is the case.
“For now, talks are at a complete pause, and the Hawks are fully prepared to enter the 2023-24 season with their current team, according to league sources.”
Pascal Siakam is coming off the best season of his career, in which he averaged over 24 points, nearly eight rebounds and six assists per contest. He’s a star in this league with championship experience, but the price is far too rich for a potential rental.
Griffin is 19 years old and nearly shot 50% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 90% from the line. He has a lot of potential to make some noise in the league moving forward.
