Hawks prudently pass on Brandon Ingram trade

The Hawks made a couple of notable moves ahead of the trade deadline, but they did not end up landing Brandon Ingram, who was a rumored target according to multiple NBA insiders.

The Pelicans traded the All-Star forward to the Raptors for Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

I have no idea what the hell Toronto is doing. They didn’t trade their own first-rounder; it was the Pacers’ first-round pick next season that they got in the Pascal Siakam trade, but still, what the hell does a club with a 16-35 record need with Ingram?

As a talent, there’s a lot to like. He’s a gifted scorer who can get his own shot and facilitate a little bit, having averaged 23 points, five assists, and five rebounds over the last five seasons.

For the Hawks, that’s far too steep of a price for a player on an expiring deal. The only reason I could’ve gotten behind the Hawks making a deal for Ingram is to see what kind of chemistry Brandon Ingram could have with Trae Young, which I have to assume is what the Raptors are doing with Scottie Barns.

So, perhaps Toronto intends on re-signing Ingram, in which case this is a fine trade for them, especially considering they didn’t even trade their more valuable first-round pick. Nevertheless, this was far too high of a price for the Hawks to justify paying.
