The Hawks only sent one player — Trae Young — to the 2020 All-Star Game in Chicago. He garnered the most fan votes, second-most media votes, and the third-most player votes. Young will get the nod again this year, but will any of his teammates join him?
Although John Collins averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds last season, his peers didn’t think he deserved All-Star honors — only receiving two votes from players. Now, he is averaging less in both categories with the Hawks’ improved roster. It is no surprise that his numbers are dipping with the emergence of De’Andre Hunter and Kevin Huerter, along with the additions of Danilo Gallinari, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Clint Capela. However, that will probably prevent Collins from receiving All-Star honors.
Hunter and Capela probably have the best chance to be selected to the All-Star Game, and even then, it is unlikely. The former Virginia star is having an impressive sophomore leap, averaging over 17 points — third-most on the team — but I don’t think it’ll be enough to get him in this year.
Capela is having a dominating first season in Atlanta and could earn attention for Defensive Player of the Year, but All-Star might be a strech. He is second in the NBA in rebounds per game and third in blocks per game.
Regardless of who represents the Hawks, it will be great for the city and State Farm Arena to host this wonderful event. I’m sure the NBA and NBPA will hammer out all COVID-19 related issues and get the players here healthy for us fans to enjoy.
