McMillan has now coached 13 games as Atlanta’s interim head coach, going 9-4 in those matchups, including an eight-game win streak. Under him, the Hawks have meshed in every phase of the game — better team basketball on both ends of the court, increased focus, and consistent fourth-quarter play.
McMillan has insisted on getting back to team-first basketball, where his predecessor Lloyd Pierce preferred a free-flowing offense. The deliberate attempt to run more plays has resulted in more opportunities for John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic, which I talked about in an earlier article. The Hawks are moving the ball more and playing old-school basketball, getting everyone involved and meshing as a team. McMillan is an experienced coach and will surely get everything he can out of this team; barring any injuries; the Hawks could make a surprisingly deep playoff run.
