On the Hawks’ first media day of the much-anticipated 2021 season, Nate McMillan told reporters that he has his “fingers crossed” that an extension with Kevin Huerter gets done soon.

McMillan isn’t the only one in the organization who is hopeful either. Just days ago, Travis Schlenk said he hopes to get something done with Huerter by the start of the regular season.
The two men are right to want to lock Red Velvet up, because he showed his value in the playoffs. Huerter was one of the team’s best players throughout the playoffs and made his presence known in Game 7 against the 76ers. On the road, he dropped 27 points to clinch an Eastern Conference Finals birth. He was McMillan’s go-to guy coming off the bench and was arguably the team’s most impressive defender.
It isn’t a question of whether the team should extend Huerter; it is what price the team should extend Heuerter at? I covered this exact topic a month ago and came away thinking a three-year extension worth $45-50 million was fair. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Schlenk decides to give him an additional year worth around $65-70 million in total.
