Hawks GM talks Trae Young’s future in Atlanta

NBA: APR 17 Play In East Hawks at Bulls

The Hawks came into the offseason with a looming decision that will impact the organization for the next decade — trade Trae Young or Dejounte Murray.

Armed with the No. 1 overall pick, much of the offseason after the lottery drawing was draft talk. Eventually, Atlanta made Zaccharie Risacher the top pick in the cycle. Once the dust settled, all eyes were on Landry Fields.

Fields is an inexperienced GM and was tasked with making one of the biggest decisions in franchise history. Shortly after the draft, the Hawks struck a deal with the Pelicans, sending Dejounte Murray to New Orleans in exchange for four players and two first-round picks.

It signals that Atlanta is building around Young, who is unquestionably the biggest professional basketball star this city has seen since Dominique Wilkins. However, some still aren’t convinced that Fields and the Hawks are all-in on Young, leading to speculation of a future trade.

At a media session, Landry Fields spoke to those murmurs, telling reporters that the organization values Trae Young…

Granted, a lot of this feels like coach speak, standard open-ended answers. Fields spoke of John Collins last offseason and Dejounte Murray this offseason in that same tone. It’s not to say the Hawks aren’t going to try to make it work with their star point guard, but it does leave the possibility of trading him at some point open.
