Hawks: Former NBA player gives Trae Young the highest of praises

Hawks vs. Bulls: Trae Young

For whatever reason — whether it be the lack of team success, his playing style, or perhaps even his personality — Trae Young isn’t mentioned alongside the superstar point guards across the league by many in the mainstream media, despite being one of the unique players in NBA history.

It’s not hyperbole to say Young is the best combination of a scorer and playmaker to walk the face of the earth. At just 26-years-old, he already has the fifth most games of 30 points and 10 assists in NBA history, a total he added to in the season opener against the Nets at State Farm Arena.

Young is currently the most gifted passer in The Association, and he’s essentially a walking 25+ points every time he puts his shoes on. There is no defense for a player that’s impossible to guard one-on-one that is also more than willing to set his teammates up for easy baskets rather than settling for tough shots. The hate from the mainstream media is nonsensical, but at least one former NBA player still has his head on right, with Brian Scalabrine recently giving Trae Young the highest form of praise.

Scalabrine not only refers to Trae Young as the best offensive player in the NBA. He also says every young player — no matter your size — should be watching and learning from the way he plays the game.

“Trae Young: his footwork is perfect, his handle is perfect, his efficiency is perfect,” Scalabrine said. “When I go to my son, I’m like you shouldn’t watch Steph Curry, like that’s otherworldly. You can’t even teach that, but what you really should do is watch this guy.”

For Hawks fans sick of hearing the national narratives about Trae Young being lazy, selfish, or unable to win, these comments from Scalabrine are more than refreshing. Does Young have his warts on the defensive end? Absolutely, but so does pretty much every other star point guard across the league, and most of them can’t hold a candle to what Trae Young brings to the table offensively.

The level of acceptance is much higher for Trae Young than just about any other player in NBA history. But eventually, he’s going to get his flowers from everybody, and the guys in the national media bashing him at every turn will be forced to eat crow.
