The Falcons finished rivalry week in disappointing fashion, missing three field goals and losing by three points to a Saints club that had just fired their head coach and traded one of their best players.
It’s certainly one that the Falcons let slip through their fingers. They outgained the Saints in nearly every major statistic, but it’s time to turn the page on Week 10 as the Broncos loom this Sunday.
However, it’s not time to turn the page on hate week. It doesn’t end in New Orleans because it also resides in Denver, with Sean Payton leading the Broncos.
Raheem Morris is intimately familiar with Payton during their respective time in Atlanta and New Orleans. Morris was on Dan Quinn’s staff from 2015 to 2020, seeing Payton’s Saints twice a year for six seasons.
Moreover, Morris coached with the Buccaneers as a defensive backs coach early in Payton’s tenure before being elevated to Tampa Bay’s head coach for a couple of seasons. For Morris, it’s all respect for Sean Payton. For Falcons fans, there’s nothing but hate for the former Saints head coach.
There’s probably not a single coach the fan base despises more than Sean Payton, which is, ironically, the only thing Saints and Falcons fans have in common. But this Broncos team isn’t like most of Payton’s team.
This is a club that is led by its defense. The offense is going to be creative and will cater to Bo Nix, but this Denver defense is menacing and will test Zac Robinson and Kirk Cousins.
The Falcons are preparing for Mile High, and the fans are hoping they can deliver a blow to Payton’s playoff hopes while elevating their own.
