In a somewhat surprising turn of events, this year’s head coaching carousel ended with former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn being hired in Washington.
From Dallas to D.C.: the Commanders are hiring Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their head coach, per league sources.

Most expected Ben Johnson to become the Commanders’ next head coach, but when he decided to stay in Detroit as their offensive coordinator, Washington pivoted to Quinn.
This will be Quinn’s second head coaching gig, and he’ll have an opportunity to host his former team in the Atlanta Falcons, which means the club will face both of their most recent head coaches next season. Earlier this week, Arthur Smith took the offensive coordinator position with the Steelers, who will travel to Atlanta in 2024.
Despite things not working out with the Falcons, both the Steelers and Commanders landed some tremendous coaches. Arthur Smith never really got a fair shake in Atlanta because of the quarterback position, and regardless of whether he’s a good head coach or not, he’s a bright offensive mind with a style of play that embodies the type of team the Pittsburgh Steelers aim to be.
Dan Quinn led the Falcons to the postseason twice, including their only Super Bowl appearance since 1998. He then went on to completely transform the Dallas Cowboys defense into one of the most well-respected units in the league. His experience and ability to connect with players should bode well in Washington, who have plenty of cap space, a half-decent roster, and the #2 overall pick.
