Falcons will draw Saints without New Orleans’ star defender

NFL: SEP 11 Saints at Falcons

The Falcons and Saints will be shorthanded this weekend, and New Orleans will be without two of their best players.

Erik McCoy, the club’s Pro Bowl center, was placed on the injured reserve earlier this week and will obviously be out this Sunday. On Friday, Dennis Allen broke the news that the defense will be without their captain as well, Demario Davis, according to John Hendrix.

Davis is not only the leader of the defense but also the entire Saints team. The loss is devastating for New Orleans. What’s even crazier is this will be the first game of Demario Davis’ entire career that he will have missed because of injury. That’s absurd.

The Falcons offense hasn’t put together four quarters of good football, and it’s not going to be easy on Sunday. For all of his faults as a head coach, Dennis Allen is a great defensive mind and has put together elite unit after elite unit, dating back to the Sean Payon days. Fortunately, it’ll be a little bit easier than it would’ve been initially without Demario Davis on the field.

It still won’t be given to the Falcons. Zac Robinson and Kirk Cousins have had three games to get familiar with each other and the offensive personnel; the rust for Cousins and the learning curve for Robinson need to start becoming crutches eventually. There wouldn’t be a better time for that than this weekend against the Falcons’ biggest rivals.

Jumping out to a quick lead in the NFC South is paramount. Raheem Morris doesn’t want to have to go to New Orleans needing a victory. It’s one of the toughest places to play. The Falcons need a victory this weekend.
