The Falcons will report to training camp this time next week, but there could still be a couple of moves on the horizon.
The defense needs bolstering. I hope to god that Raheem Morris isn’t content with the cornerback room, but the safety and edge units could also use some TLC.
In that same breath, the Falcons have a surplus of quarterbacks and could end up trading Talyor Heinicke, who appeared on Bleacher Report’s trade block big board.
9. Taylor Heinicke, QB, Atlanta Falcons
Potential Landing Spots: Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants
Projected Trade Value: 2025 fifth-round pick
The Falcons are in an obvious position to move Heinicke; no team needs two backup quarterbacks. After signing Kirk Cousins to a $180 million free agent deal and drafting Michael Penix Jr. with a top 10 pick, the veteran Heinicke became expendable.
Now, the only factor working against a potential trade is Heinicke’s price tag. He took a pay cut earlier in the offseason and is only accounting for a $4.5 million cap hit; that’s a more than fair number.
However, the Falcons should be interested in getting back a defender, if possible, or an earlier Day 3 draft pick. Heinicke has started nearly 30 games in the NFL, including in the postseason. He could be had for a fifth-rounder and will be a dirt cheap starter; there will be interest.
