A new name that popped up on Falcons fans’ radars ahead of the trade deadline is an old friend — Calais Campbell.
Kevin Patra of NFL.com suggests a reunion should be considered, and it’s hard to look at the state of the two franchises and argue. The Falcons obviously need to add to the pass rush while the Dolphins are in a free fall.
“The offseason addition of Matthew Judon hasn’t had the desired effect in Atlanta; the team ranks dead last in the NFL in both sacks (six) and QB pressure rate (25.9%) this season. Judon has just 13 pressures off the edge, and opponents are double-teaming Grady Jarrett into oblivion,” Kevin Patra writes.
Atlanta’s struggles have been well documented. They rank dead last in sacks and near the bottom of the league in pretty much every pass rush category. A guy like Campbell would undoubtedly help improve the Falcons in that facet.
“Despite being 38 years old, Campbell can still get after it. He’s generated 16 QB pressures and two sacks. His pressure rate of 12.2 percent is better than anyone on the Falcons with at least 100 rushes (Judon currently paces Atlanta with a rate of 7.9 percent),” Patra continues.
Campbell, along with Bud Dupree, led the Falcons in sacks last season but he left in free agency for greener pastures, or should I say sunnier beaches. Things haven’t worked out in Miami, though.
The Dolphins are 2-5 and have to consider a potential sell-off, especially if they drop another game. With the Bills looming on Sunday, that’s a distinct possibility. Given the familiarity between Calais Campbell and the Falcons, a reunion could be just what the doctor ordered.
More than just bolstering the pass rush, the Falcons have been unable to slow down opposing rushing attacks this season. Campbell would help in that area as well. It seems like a perfect fit on paper, one that would not require much draft capital going back to the Dolphins.
