Falcons updated salary cap space following recent moves

The Falcons have been busy this offseason, from signing Kirk Cousins to trading for Matt Judon to extending A.J. Terrell. Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris have been wheeling and dealing.

At this juncture of the offseason, the roster is in better shape than it’s been in quite a long time. The Falcons have spent a lot of money to get there too. They gave Kirk Cousins $180 million in free agency, including more than half guaranteed.

On the same day, the Falcons announced a $39 million deal with free agent wideout Darnell Mooney, but they weren’t done spending. The club also drafted Michael Penix Jr., whose rookie contract is more expensive than other prospective draft picks because he’s a quarterback. The Falcons remained quiet for several months then made three massive moves in about a week’s span. First, they traded for Matt Judon and inherited his contract then immediately signed Justin Simmons to a one-year, $9 million free agent contract.

Within another few days, A.J. Terrell’s contract extension was announced, making him the second-highest paid cornerback in the NFL with a new four-year, $81 million deal.

The Falcons are about done for this offseason, but there are a couple of positions that could use bolstering. Atlanta has around $7.6 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap, and that cap space could be used to bring in another cornerback or receiver.

Tutu Atwell and John Metchie are two possible targets that I’ve talked about, and each will need cap space to acquire, but the Falcons should have enough, even without moving any more money around.
