Even though the Falcons reportedly made a push to re-sign Foye Oluokun, Atlanta lost out to the Jaguars, who signed the Yale product to a lucrative three-year deal. The Falcons also said goodbye to Russell Gage, who signed within the division and joined Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. Losing out on those free agents isn’t all negative, though.
Per Nick Korte at Over The Cap, Atlanta should receive a 4th round pick and a 5th round pick back in 2023 for losing both players. However, compensatory picks cancel each other out if a team signs a free agent. And unfortunately, the Falcons will seemingly lose that 4th-rounder from Oluokun after the team signed Lorenzo Carter.
Lorenzo Carter's contract is enough to qualify for compensatory free agent status.
Despite only being at the 7th round, that cancels out the Falcons' 4th round 2023 compensatory pick for the departure of Foyesade Oluokun. https://t.co/MSzsUWpCdh

Even though Carter should have a positive impact in Atlanta, losing a compensatory pick because of it is unforgivable. He will likely be a one-and-done in Atlanta, which means instead of a 4th-round rookie on an affordable four-year contract, the Falcons will get one year of Lorenzo Carter. It’s definitely a hard pill to swallow, especially for a regime with as many warts as this one.
