The Falcons have continued their search for a new defensive coordinator following the firing of Jimmy Lake, with the latest news coming from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, who reports that the Falcons are interviewing Wink Martindale.
Following his exit from the NFL in 2023, Martindale took the job under Sherrone Moore at Michigan, where he led a unit that did some very good things across the 2024 campaign.
Most notably, the Wolverines’ defense held Ohio State’s high-flying offense to just 10 points as Michigan topped their rival in the final game of the regular season. Martindale’s defense then followed it up with an absolute masterclass against Alabama, holding Kalen DeBoer’s offense to just 13 points in their bowl game.
The Wolverines ended the season with the No. 5 rushing defense, No. 11 total defense, and No. 19 scoring defense. Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, Wink Martindale spent 20 seasons in the NFL, making stops in New York with the Giants, Baltimore, Denver, and Oakland.
Martindale is now the second official interview on the books, the first being Lou Anarumo. The Falcons should be casting a wide net, but as I’ve said multiple times before, nothing matters until the talent is improved, and that’s especially true for Martindale.
The veteran coach loves to play man while bringing a lot of pressure in exotic looks. The Falcons don’t exactly have the personnel to make that work right now.
