Terry Fontenot has had the same strategy each offseason — filling needs through free agency and taking the best player available in the draft. It won’t change for the Falcons this year either.
The team once again owns the 8th overall pick, and still has holes on the roster, specifically at the edge and cornerback positions. This isn’t the roster the Falcons are going into April’s draft with. I expect Fontenot to add bodies in both units, maybe even a starting-caliber safety too.
Atlanta will have plenty of options with their top pick, though. There are several directions they can go because many expect the first four selections to be quarterbacks, putting the Falcons in a position to land a top 5 talent outside of the top 5.
It’s about a month away from the draft, and most mocks have the Falcons taking Dallas Turner, who told Tom Pelissero he already has a pre-draft visit scheduled with Terry Fontenot and company.
Alabama edge Dallas Turner — who could be the first defensive player off the board — told me he has upcoming pre-draft visits with, among others, the #Bears (Nos. 1 and 9 overall picks), #Falcons (8) and #Vikings (11 and 23).

Turner, Jared Verse, and Laiatu Latu are all in the conversation when the Falcons are on the clock in the first round, each bringing something different to the table.
Verse is more refined than Turner but isn’t as athletic. Latu is the most technical of the bunch, though. With Turner, the Falcons would be betting on his ceiling. He is a freaky athlete who led the SEC in sacks last season.
