Falcons: The Michael Penix Jr. and Drake London connection will feed families

NFL: NOV 03 Cowboys at Falcons

Despite seven straight seasons without a postseason berth, the future of the Atlanta Falcons is as bright as it has been in a long time with Michael Penix Jr. under center. The 8th overall pick in the 2024 draft flashed all the tools necessary to be a franchise quarterback in his first three games as a starter, making more than a handful of dazzling plays, while also showcasing a mental acumen that’s far ahead of schedule.

It was a night and day difference with Penix under center compared to Kirk Cousins, and nobody benefited more than rising star wide receiver Drake London. The 8th overall pick in the 2022 draft blossomed into one of the NFL’s most productive receivers in his third season, finishing fourth in receiving yards with 1,271 to go along with nine touchdowns. Nearly a quarter of that came in the final two weeks with Penix under center, as their chemistry became evident, particularly in the season finale, as Drake London finished with 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

After the game, both Penix and London spoke fondly of each other.

“I can’t wait for the offseason to come back even better,” Penix said of his connection with Drake London.

“Absolute poise,” London said. “He’s got a frickin’ rocket and he just slings the ball, and he’s got that dog in him. He’s somebody who’s a winner, and I think you see that just right off the gate.”

There was also a moment the two shared after the game in which Michael Penix could be seen saying,”Aye, it’s coming. That bitch is clicking.”

To further the point, Penix targeted London on 45% of his first reads. London received six of Penix’s eight end zone targets, and the USC product averaged 117 yard per game with the former Washington star under center.

Drake London finally received competent quarterback play and instantly turned into a top-ten receiver in the league. With a full offseason to work with Penix, London may find himself in the conversation for the top pass catcher in the league.
