The Falcons are regularly tweaking the bottom of the roster. Earlier in the week, the club announced a flurry of roster moves and followed it up with more on Tuesday, including a surprise cut of a veteran in Germain Ifedi.
The former Chicago Bear was brought back this offseason to assume a similar role as the offense’s swing tackle, but he’s better suited to just stay on the right side, which had to prompt the move to release him.
It’s a bit surprising because the Falcons don’t have an obvious candidate to take on that role. As it stands right now, former XFL tackle Barry Wesley will be competing with Tyler Vrabel, Josh Miles, and Ethan Greenidge.
The timing suggests Ifedi was potentially dealing with an injury, or perhaps the club loves one of these aforementioned candidates. To me, the position still needs some addressing. Don’t be surprised if the Falcons find their guy in August when all the other teams make their way down to 53 players.
The Falcons also announced a slew of other signings — former XFL defender LaCale London, safety Lukas Denis, Barry Wesley, and Austin Aune.
Aune is a 29-year-old quarterback that spent six years in the Yankees’ farm system before making his way to North Texas, where he threw for 3,500 yards and 33 touchdowns last season.
Logan Woodside should be considered the favorite to be the third quarterback on the roster, who will likely remain inactive most weeks. Aune and Woodside will compete for that final spot.
Best of luck to Germain Ifedi and the newest Falcons!
