The Falcons are still tweaking the roster as the preseason looms, adding former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver James Washington today.
The #Falcons are signing veteran WR James Washington, sources say. Washington had 114 catches for 1,629 yards and 11 TDs over four years with the #Steelers (2018-21), the last two of which he was coached by Ike Hilliard, now Atlanta’s WR coach. pic.twitter.com/FvbJCTIDKq

Washington never quite lived up to the billing of a second-round pick in Pittsburgh, with his best season coming in year 2 (2019), when he caught 44 passes for 735 yards and three touchdowns. He would go onto finish out his rookie contract with the Steelers before catching on with the Cowboys in 2022. However, he only appeared in two games and did not record a single reception. Since then, he’s bounced around, spending time with the Giants, Saints and Colts, but never appearing in a game.
Now 28 years old, Washington has an uphill battle to make the Falcons roster. Receiver may have been a weakness coming into the offseason, but Atlanta made it a focal point, adding a number of starters and depth pieces. He’ll likely have to prove he can make an impact on special teams if he wants any chance of sticking around.
Offense isn’t the issue in Atlanta. This is a team that pretty much has every box checked on that side of the ball. The defense is an entirely different story, though. It could use starting caliber pieces and depth at just about every position, but for whatever reason, the Falcons continue to ignore them as the season approaches.
