With the NFL Trade Deadline looming, rumors are flooding, and the latest surrounds the Falcons and Azeez Ojulari.
According to Adam Schefter, the club has been “aggressive about making pass rush calls” and expected to pursue a trade for Ojulari. The Giants are skidding with a 2-6 record and have already invested heavily into their defensive front, making Ojulari, who is on an expiring deal, expendable.
Ojulari has six sacks in eight games, and the Falcons, as a team, have six sacks through eight games. So, yeah, it would be a tremendous improvement for Atlanta’s pass rush.
He’s far from the only pass rusher garnering trade interest, though. The Lions are pursuing Za’Darius Smith, per reports, but that shouldn’t discourage the Falcons from calling the Browns. A couple of other names that should pique the Falcons’ interest are Preston Smith and Calais Campbell.
“Teams have called the Miami Dolphins to check in on Calais Campbell. Calls have also been made to the Green Bay Packers regarding Preston Smith, especially with the need for pass rushers across the league,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic writes.
The 38-year-old is still terrorizing quarterbacks, accumulating 22 tackles, five quarterback hits and two sacks in seven starts. A reunion with Campbell would certainly improve the Falcons’ pass rush, but it could also kill two birds with one stone in improving the unit’s run defense too.
The 31-year-old Smith has 16 tackles, four quarterback hits and 2.5 sacks in eight starts. The Packers are squarely in the hunt for a playoff spot, but they rotate a lot of edge players, and the veteran is seemingly on the outside looking in on Green Bay’s defense.
The Falcons should absolutely be in the market for Ojulari, but also bringing in a veteran like Calais Campbell or Preston Smith would show fans that they really do believe they can compete in the postseason this year. They wouldn’t be bad consolation prizes either if they’re unable to acquire Ojulari.
