The Falcons haven’t been ravaged by injuries like their friends across the city in the Atlanta Braves, but they haven’t been unscathed in that department either.
The linebacker unit has been hit more than any other position group, with Nate Landman and Troy Andersen in and out of the lineup all season long. Their absences have been tremendous. Drew Dalman has also missed extensive time, hitting the injured reserve following the team’s Week 3 contest against the Chiefs. He’s eligible to come off the IR this week, but it doesn’t seem likely.
The Falcons released their Week 8 depth chart ahead of their second game against the Buccaneers. There was a notable omission — Dalman. When asked about his status, Raheem Morris was noncommittal. I assume the Falcons are expecting Ryan Neuzil to start for the fifth consecutive game.
Thankfully, unlike Andersen, the Falcons aren’t dying to get Dalman back. Of course, he’s an upgrade over Neuzil, but the backup has proven to be more than capable of manning the position.
Neuzil has performed admirably, including in the Falcons’ Week 5 win over the Buccaneers. The task this week will be similar to what it was in the first meeting — neutralize or at least corral Vita Vea, arguably the best nose tackle in football.
Hopefully, the Falcons can welcome Drew Dalman back in Week 9.
