Ben Johnson, the hottest head coach candidate on the market, is taking over the Bears while the rest of the teams with vacancies continue their search, including the Atlanta Falcons’ biggest rivals in the New Orleans Saints.
Dennis Allen was fired in the middle of the season and was succeeded by Darren Rizzi in the interim. The Saints didn’t have a chance at Ben Johnson, who was essentially deciding between the Bears and returning to the Lions, but they did have a shot at the coach that many believe to be the second-best available candidate — Aaron Glenn.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Saints were expected to “make a strong push” and would “probably land” Glenn over the Jets and other teams. However, The New York Post’s Brian Costello wrote in his “Inside the Jets” column that Glenn “has told people the Jets are his first choice if he were to be offered a head coaching position.”
Fast forward to the present, and it looks like Costello was correct. Per Josina Anderson, the Lions defensive coordinator has made it known he’ll be taking over in New York, leaving the Falcons’ rival reeling.
Glenn played for both teams during his career, with the Jets from 1994 to 2001 and the Saints in 2008. The ties go further than that too. He was a scout for the Jets in 2012 and 2013 but the Saints defensive backs coach from 2016 to 2020 before following Dan Campbell to Detroit in 2021 to be the Lions defensive coordinator.
The Falcons have their own issues to work out, but it’s always funny to see the Saints wallow in misery.
Update:
According to Adam Schefter, the Jets have finalized an agreement to make Aaron Glenn their next head coach. The Saints reach a new low, losing out to the lowly Jets for their top head coach candidate.
