Per the NFL’s transaction wire, Atlanta has restructured the contracts of Matt Ryan, Allen Bailey, & Jake Matthews.
The details of the re-working aren’t known yet, but the Falcons had to push more and more of these guys’ cap hits down the road so they could bring in the likes of Dante Fowler and Todd Gurley. The contracts of Ryan and Mathews have been restructured before, and transitioning part of their salary into signing bonus helps spread out the cap hit over the life of the contract. However, I’m not sure it will save the Falcons enough money to make another significant signing.
Allen Bailey had a roster bonus of $750,000 due today, so he is locked in for 2020. A guy who a lot of fans thought would be cut is sticking around. Along with Ryan & Matthews, the details of the re-working are still not known. The Falcons also maneuvered the cap this week by cutting and immediately re-signing punter Ryan Allen. Under the new CBA, his cap hit is less under the minimum salary benefit, which saves the team about $300,000.
We’ll keep you updated with the numbers of the restructured deals as they become available.
