Coming into the week, all of the talk around the Falcons was about what they would do to replace DeMarrco Hellams and Bralen Trice.
The club brought Justin Simmons in for a visit to bolster the secondary, prompting many fans to cite the lack of cap space, which was fair. So, when a deal was announced that the Falcons would be trading for Matthew Judon, it led fans to speculate about what Atlanta would do to create that necessary cap space. Well, now we have an answer.
According to Greg Auman, the Falcons have restructured Chris Lindstrom‘s contract, converting $11.2 million of his $12.5 million base salary into a signing bonus, spread over the five years of his contract, creating just under $9 million in cap space.
Falcons moving forward with a Lindstrom restructure, as we'd suggested last night. His $12.5 million base salary becomes a $1.3m base and $11.2m bonus, spread over the five years remaining on his deal. Creates an immediate cap savings of just under $9 million. https://t.co/YCwFMfOIKS

The obvious move was always Lindstrom because he’s just beginning his new contract, and he’s young. I imagine the Falcons’ thoughts are that he’ll be in Atlanta for a third contract as well, so pushing off some of his money isn’t a big deal.
This gives Atlanta roughly $3 million in cap space with Judon’s contract on the books, certainly not enough to sign Justin Simmons. However, just as they did with Lindstrom’s contract, the Falcons can restructure others to create more cap space, like Jessie Bates III, who is also expected to be here long-term.
They can also extend A.J. Terrell and create as much cap space as restructuring Lindstrom’s deal.
