Falcons reportedly reigniting Arthur Smith’s pet project

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitutionthe Falcons are reuniting with an old friend, bringing Feleipe Franks back to Flowery Branch.

“He’s coming in to sign (on Thursday),” the source told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

I don’t even have to ask if you remember the entire ordeal in 2021. Franks signed with the Falcons after playing collegiately at Arkansas and Florida as a quarterback and was the backup to Matt Ryan as a rookie.

Then, Arthur Smith decided to play mad scientist and turn Franks into a tight end after the Falcons drafted Desmond Ridder and signed Marcus Mariota.

It was an abomination. Feleipe Franks couldn’t block well, couldn’t catch, and basically anything else a tight end is required to do in this league. Somehow, he stuck around, spending most of his time on special teams, but he did garner a couple of targets, of which he didn’t catch.

What’s even crazier is the Panthers saw the failed experiment and said, “Yeah, we’d like to try too!” Franks played nearly 70% of Carolina’s special teams snaps and even caught his first NFL pass.

While it shouldn’t mean much to Falcons fans, it’s puzzling nonetheless that Terry Fontenot’s front office thinks high enough of Franks to give him another deal.
