In a bit of surprising news, it looks like Arthur Smith potentially already has his defensive coordinator — a former Titans connection.
Omg I’m hearing some great things for the @AtlantaFalcons per @RapSheet DEFENSE!!!!

Continue to hear that longtime top NFL defensive coordonator Dean Pees, who retired but coached with Arthur Smith in Tennessee, will be joining Smith's new staff in Atlanta in some capacity

As it looks more and more likely former #Titans DC Dean Pees will be joining the #Falcons, here are the stats from his two final years in TEN:
2018: 3rd in scoring, 8th in yards, 10th 3rd down, 2nd RZ
2019: 12th in scoring, 21st in yards, 8th 3rd down, 31st RZ— Kevin Knight (@FalcoholicKevin) January 16, 2021
Dean Pees has coached a lot of very talented defenses in New England and Baltimore. While he had some warts in Tennessee, he has an impressive coaching pedigree and knows the game well. Dean’s son, Matt, is a likely candidate to join Atlanta in some capacity as well. One thing I really like about Pees as a defensive coordinator is the way he mixes up schemes. I’ve been begging Atlanta to move to a 3-4 defense, and that’s the base Pees runs out of. He isn’t married to it, but I think a 3-4 fits the strengths of Atlanta the best — the linebackers.
Nothing is official yet, but it looks like Dean Pees will come out of retirement to coach in some capacity with this Falcons defense that badly needs help.
