In a flurry of Braves Spring Training news, the Falcons have announced their plans at backup quarterback for 2020:
The #Falcons are expected to pick up QB Matt Schaub’s $2 million option for 2020, source said. No guarantees, but Atlanta retaining Matt Ryan’s veteran backup as it heads into the offseason.

With Schaub’s option being so cheap, this move makes a lot of sense. Personally, I wanted to see Atlanta give friend of the podcast Kurt Benkert a shot, but Schaub provides a steady veteran presence and played well in the one start he had last season, throwing for 460 yards in a loss against Seattle. But it’s obvious if Ryan goes down for an extended period, the season is over. Considering the option isn’t guaranteed, and moving on from him will only cost the Falcons $375,000, Benkert still has a chance to take the reins of the backup job if he impresses in the preseason.
