Attrition is natural when it comes to NFL staffs, and Falcons fans are quite familiar with it.
The club has had three defensive coordinators since 2021, but the one that stings the most is still Kyle Shanahan taking over the 49ers after one of the greatest offensive seasons in league history. That’s just the name of the game today.
The Falcons might have some turnover this offseason too. Jimmy Lake’s pass rush appears to be having an end-of-season resurgence, but this still one of the worst defenses in the league, a far cry from where they were a season ago, despite plenty of investment into that side of the ball this past offseason. There’s a chance Raheem Morris will replace him if things don’t improve drastically over the last four games.
As far as Zac Robinson, I would be shocked if he’s replaced, even if his inexperience has shown at times. The Falcons know better than most that firing a bright, young offensive mind too early isn’t ideal. Giving Shanahan another season proved fruitful, and I could argue they should’ve done the same with Steve Sarkisian.
However, there’s also a non-zero chance that Robinson garners other opportunities, even if he hasn’t been perfect this season. According to Ian Rapoport, the Oklahoma State program was going to target Zac Robinson to replace Mike Gundy if he did not agree to restructure his contract, which ended up happening.
Robinson was the Cowboys quarterback in the late 2000s, setting a school record in 2007 with 3,671 total offensive yards. Tim Tebow was the only other player to throw for at least 2,800 yards and run for 800 en route to a Heisman Trophy.
The Falcons offensive coordinator isn’t going to be a hot commodity during the upcoming hiring cycle, but that will not be the case in the near future if he eventually lives up to the hype that came with him when Raheem Morris initially named Robinson his OC.
