The saying you should never throw stones from a glass house rings true in many aspects of life. However, Falcons fans cannot help but laugh at the Saints — nobody wants to be the head coach in New Orleans.
After firing Dennis Allen, who was never qualified for the job in the first place, Darren Rizzi took over and didn’t do much. When news broke that Mickey Loomis would be keeping his role as GM and leading the search for a new head coach, Saints fans collectively sighed while Falcons fans collectively cheered.
Very quickly, it became clear that it wasn’t a desirable gig. Aaron Glenn, the candidate many believed to be the second-best available behind Ben Johnson, coached and played in New Orleans and was thought to be the Saints top target.
In reality, the Saints never had a shot. Glenn chose the Jets, a franchise that is among the most dysfunctional in football. That is a ringing endorsement of what has become of the New Orleans Saints; someone chose the JETS over you?! That’s embarrassing.
But somehow, the process has only gotten worse for the Falcons’ biggest rivals. Every notable candidate has taken another job or chosen to stick in their current role.
Kliff Kingsbury is staying in Washington as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator. Joe Brady, the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, has decided the same. Most recently, former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy elected to stay UNEMPLOYED instead of taking another interview with the Saints.
Josina Anderson reported that there were questions surrounding a potential partnership between McCarthy and New Orleans “over the power structure & communication when it comes to football decisions, length of contract, etc. … a lot of league perspectives have been given as to what owner Gayle Benson should do when it comes to operations in her building in the future.”
The Saints are in awful standing with the salary cap and cannot get any real relief from parting ways with any of their significant contracts. Meanwhile, Mickey Loomis has strung together multiple poor draft classes. It’s an aging roster with very little financial flexibility, led by a GM who has complete and total power. Who in the hell would possibly want that job?
Well, there are only 32 of them, so someone will eventually take it, but it won’t be a very desirable candidate. Right now, Kellen Moore seems to be their top target, with Mike Kafka and Anthony Weaver rounding out the list of known candidates.
If this blog gets into the hands of Saints fans, they’ll respond with some 28-3 quip to get back at me or other Falcons fans, but it doesn’t change the fact that nobody wants them.
