The headlines are going to be dominated by the Falcons quarterback search, but there will be other exciting acquisitions next week when the new league year signals free agency.
With needs at receiver, defensive back, and edge defender, the club should be quite active in filling out its roster under new head coach Raheem Morris. Other than the most pressing needs, depth will be a focus as well.
The trenches, in particular, can never have enough quality bodies. This week the Falcons extended Ryan Neuzil, who can play all three interior positions on the offensive line, but the defensive side of the ball needs to be addressed as well.
Pro Football Focus believes Atlanta is a landing spot for former first-round pick Javon Kinlaw.
New Falcons head coach Raheem Morris will likely want to add some temporary replacements for Grady Jarrett while he recovers from injury and gets fully back up to speed, but the team may not want to make a third splash along the interior with Jarrett and David Onyemata both on sizable deals. This is a buy-low on a former first-round pick who still shows flashes of elite athleticism but hasn’t quite put it all together just yet.
Kinlaw might actually be the perfect kind of interior defender target in free agency for the Falcons.
He flashed at times but failed to realize his full potential in an absolutely perfect situation in San Francisco, surrounded by All-Pro talent on the 49ers’ defensive line.
His market value is set at around $5 million, so for a former first-round pick with something to prove, the value is great for a Falcons team that doesn’t want to spend a ton on the position with Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata taking up a lot of cap space.
