The Falcons are going to have to compete with a handful of teams for the best available quarterbacks this offseason.
Most expect the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots to take signal callers with the first three selections of the draft. The Raiders under new head coach Antonio Pierce are expected to be in the market. The Vikings, Broncos, and Seahawks could also acquire a quarterback this offseason.
That’s all to say the Falcons will have a lot of competition. So, how can they convince prospective targets to choose Atlanta?
Well, the city itself is a great place to live, and the organization is first-class, even if they’ve made some questionable personnel decisions. Arthur Blank is a quality owner, and the actual roster is ripe for a quarterback to come in and immediately take them to playoffs by way of the easiest division in football.
There’s a lot to like about the Falcons as a destination for a quarterback, and ESPN believes Atlanta is the best team fit for the top free agent option — Kirk Cousins.
3. Kirk Cousins, QB
Best team fit: Atlanta Falcons
The Vikings should be in the mix to re-sign Cousins, but I think he fits really well with Atlanta under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson (who worked under Sean McVay in Los Angeles). It works well for Cousins in both the play-action and dropback passing game. Before tearing his right Achilles in Week 8, Cousins was completing 69.5% of his throws and had 18 touchdown passes to five interceptions. He would be an upgrade under center for an Atlanta offense that has plenty of young offensive skill talent in Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson.
It seems the top options, at least as far as social media is concerned, for teams looking for a quarterback are Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins. The former provides upside and the possibility of a long-term solution at the position, while the latter will help whichever acquiring team compete immediately.
Cousins has to be an attractive option for a Falcons team that hasn’t made the postseason since the 2017 campaign. Arthur Blank didn’t fire Arthur Smith to be patient. He wants to win right now, and Kirk Cousins is the best option to do that.
