The Falcons announced a flurry of personnel changes to the coaching staff. Several hires were internal promotions, but one position stood out more than the others — Desmond Ridder‘s quarterbacks coach wasn’t named.
I figured Atlanta would acquire an outside candidate, but the team’s website announced that offensive coordinator Dave Ragone will assume those duties while also continuing to coordinate the offense.
Charles London was Atlanta’s former quarterbacks coach but is headed for Tennessee to be the Titans’ pass game coordinator. Ragone is a former NFL quarterback, so he understands the position in the NFL to a certain degree, though he didn’t exactly thrive in the league.
The team’s head coach has an impact on developing a young quarterback, but his position coach sees him intimately every single day, and that guy will be Dave Ragone. Developing Desmond Ridder should be one of the Falcons’ top priorities, and his quarterback coach plays a considerable role in that.
It’s not the sexiest hire, and I don’t love it. We’ll see how it works out.
