The Falcons are coming off a 30-17 home loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, but technically, Atlanta still has a chance to make the postseason in Arthur Smith’s first year as head coach. The current betting favorites to win the Super Bowl are superior to the Falcons in most areas, so this 13-point loss isn’t necessarily surprising. Going into the matchup against Tampa Bay, Atlanta had the advantage on the injury report; however, several Falcons left the game with injuries. Richie Grant and Ade Ogundeji suffered ankle injuries while Fabian Moreau went down after injuring his hamstring.
Arthur Smith gave updates on them on Monday, and they don’t seem to be long-term situations. Staying on the injury front, the Falcons could also be getting some firepower back on offense. Tuesday, the Falcons designated Hayden Hurst to return to practice. Even though his impact was minimal to begin the season, having someone like Hurst back in the lineup can only help. The Falcons also signed Cornell Armstrong for the first time and Parker Hesse back to the practice squad while releasing Chris Williamson and Rick Leonard.

The addition of Armstrong leaves one roster spot open, but he could’ve been added as the team deals with injuries to the secondary — Moreau and Grant. Armstrong has spent time with the Dolphins and Texans since being drafted in the sixth round by Miami in 2018; most recently, Houston released him from the injured reserve at the beginning of the season. More than anything, Armstrong will play a role on special teams if one of the team’s defensive backs can’t go and the staff is in a bind.
