As the NFL trade deadline approaches and the season progresses, the Atlanta Falcons remain committed to strengthening their pass rush.
While the team made strides by drafting Bralen Trice, Brandon Dorlus, and Ruke Orhorhoro, and trading for Matthew Judon, it’s clear that enhancing this aspect of the team won’t be a quick fix. In fact, it may take more than one offseason to fully address the issue.
Similar to their approach to the quarterback position last offseason, the Falcons will likely prioritize the pass rush in the upcoming months. To make a significant impact, they should consider pursuing multiple pass rushers through both the draft and free agency.
Pro Football Focus’s Trevor Sikkema has them doing just that in his latest mock draft, landing a familiar face in UGA’s Mykel Williams with the 22nd pick.
The front-seven remains the Falcons’ top need. Georgia edge rusher Mykel Williams has missed some time this season and is still raw as a pass-rusher, but he is strong as an ox in run defense and could be a three-down player for Atlanta.
Mykel Williams has played in just five games this season but has still managed to record 2.0 sacks, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. Last year, he showcased his potential with 18 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks in 13 games for Georgia.
At just 20 years old, Williams will turn 21 by the start of the 2025 NFL season, making him a highly sought-after prospect in the league. However, while the Falcons could benefit from a player like Williams, it’s crucial to recognize their broader needs.
Atlanta requires experienced veterans who can contribute immediately, alongside promising young talents like Williams, to establish a reliable pass rush that can sustain performance even in the face of injuries and roster changes.
